CHAPTER 26
Kenzie
EIGHT YEARS AGO…
I was used to being alone, but I was terrified of being in Southern California. This was unknown territory for me, and I wasn’t crazy about the neighborhood I’d ended up in because of my budget.
But it wasn’t like I wasn’t used to living in a crappy area.
I’d get out eventually. I had to hang onto that.
Relief flowed through me, a sudden burst of happiness that I normally didn’t experience, because my interview had gone well for my first adult modeling job.
I was desperately hoping the agency would take me on. I wasn’t going to be able to survive well if I didn’t have work.
I’ll find something, even if it isn’t in modeling.
I’d been surviving my entire life, and I’d keep on trying. It would pay off eventually. It had to.
I hurried to my new apartment from the nearest bus stop, hating the fact that it had taken me so long to get home. The long trip had landed me back in my neighborhood after dark.
I’ll find a better place after I get working.
At the age of eighteen, I already had work experience. Surely somebody would give me a job. I didn’t care much about what kind of work I could find. I just needed something to earn me money while I tried to launch my modeling career.
Maybe then I could attend college, and get a normal career, something that would last after I was too old to model anymore.
I entered the old apartment building and trudged up the stairs, bone tired from traveling back and forth to the modeling agency. I’d lost count of how many buses it had taken to get there and back, and I’d walked for miles from the nearest bus stop.
All I could think about was getting something to eat, and collapsing on the tattered couch I’d gotten from the thrift store. My furnishings weren’t much, but they were mine.
The moment I walked into the apartment, I knew something was wrong. Stuff I’d put into the kitchen drawers were now on the floor, and the small space that I’d left tidy that morning looked like it had been ransacked.
A chill ran up my spine, and I’d learned to listen to my instincts. I turned around to run out of the kitchen, but I wasn’t fast enough.
Two enormous bodies dressed in black tripped me up, and I ended up on the floor completely winded.
I rose up quickly, trying to save my ass.
Neither of them said a word, but one of the men reached for my arm, and he snagged it as I went flying by him. The other one pulled out a switchblade that was horrifyingly large.
“Please, don’t…” I begged as he lifted his arm. I was only eighteen. I wasn’t ready to die. I’d worked too damn hard to stay alive so I could have a better life.
I was unable to speak as the blade sliced through me over and over again.
Pain.
More pain.
Then agony.
Horror.
And finally, the blessed relief of blacking out.
